(KPL) The Lao government is speeding and focusing on investment to develop the hydropower electricity sector, irrigation system and the supply of water programme for people in rural areas in a bid to increase income for locals and reduce the migration of rural people into cities.
According to the evaluation of the Lao National Water Resources and Environment Agency, the investment in hydropower electricity development, irrigation system and water supply have become the most special priority of the Lao government.
People’s living conditions in rural areas throughout the country will benefit from the development of state hydropower electricity sector and will also develop the general economy of the country as well as the elimination of people’s migration into cities.
The hydropower electricity projects in Laos have been developed and encouraged from the Lao government and even international organisations by focusing on helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in rural areas.
Presently, the Government has ensured that the increase in the current existing electricity stations will help improving the living conditions of people in rural areas.
Besides the better living conditions, people will also have more opportunities to get work and will be self-sufficient in food stuff thanks to the investment of the Government in the construction of irrigation system in rural areas.
This is part of the Government’s plan to reduce the slash-and-burn cultivation. However, the development of water supply projects for people in rural and remote areas has provided higher benefit to society than financial support solely, said an official from the Lao National Water Resources and Environment Agency, who asks not to be identified.
?People in rural areas will receive direct and non-direct benefits from this state investment projects, especially in water feeding for farms and health education,? he concluded.
