Fiji's interim government has made its first official comment about its new decree, which gives it complete immunity from prosecution. The decree protects those involved in the 2000 and 2006 coups, including Commodore Frank Bainimarama, the military and Fiji police.
Interim attorney-general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has on Wednesday told Fiji Village website, the decree is a forward looking plan and it does address the issue of compensation. It's been alleged the decree was formulated after the interim government failed to overturn a court decision, which awarded compensation to a Fiji man who was tortured during the overthrow of the government in 2000.
