(KPL) The World Bank has granted USD$27.8 million to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to realize its priority projects involving basic infrastructure development and capacity building for 2010-2014 period.
The agreement on the World Bank assistance was signed last Friday in Vientiane by WB’s County Director for Southeast Asia, Ms. Annette Dixon and Deputy Minister of Finance of Laos, Ms. Viengthong Siphandone. The signing was witnessed by Minister of Finance, Mr. Somdy Duangdy, WB?s Vice President for East Asia-Pacific Region, Mr. James W. Adam, Office Head of Public Works and Transport and relevant officials of both sides.
The projects to be implemented with the World Bank grant assistance include road improvement and maintenance projects and these include two national roads Road No.1B Phongsaly-Houaphanh (109 km) and Road No.6A in Houaphanh province (62 Km) and the implementation of national strategic plan on road safety activities.
The financial assistance will also support the capacity building on road maintenance and management and environmental protection for officials of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in provinces.
Part of the financial assistance will go to spot rehabilitation and periodic maintenance of roads damaged by Ketsana in southern provinces. It will also support an emergency contingency fund that would disburse for emergency civil work and construction materials needed to ensure the pass ability and safety of national roads across the country.
