The Ministry of Interior (MoI) launched here yesterday the ID-related Electronic Voter Identification System, and the seventh term logo of elections which will be held next October. The event was presided over by Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, Minister of National Economy and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, at the MoI.
The system is used for the first time in the region in co-operation with the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the MoI. It is designed to prove the presence of the elector on the election day and will check any attempt to repeat the voting in the elections.
Sayyid Saud bin Ibrahim al Busaidy, Minister of Interior, told the media that the media campaign for the launching of this application begins to make awareness among the voters.
“According to the Majlis Ash’shura regulations, each wilayat which has a population of more than 30,000 people will have more than two members and less than this number will have one member,” he added.
“Gamalto company is specialised in the security, smartcard and document for identity cards particularly. We have been working with ROP since 2004, starting with identity cards and then we continue developing applications and solutions. We are very proud with the launch of this new application which is considered the first in the region and one leading application in the world,” Chief Executive Officer of Gamalto commented.
According to the elections regulations, every Omani has the right to elect members of the Majlis if he/she is provided with the voting conditions. Every Omani can also stand as a candidate if he/she meets the required candidature conditions.
The regulations for elections to the Majlis include a number of measures related to the practice of these rights.
