South Africa: Capitec Bank Supports Numeracy Education in the Eastern Cape
Source: SA - The Good News

Focus: ICT for MDGs
Country: South Africa

The learners were inducted into the programme by the Mayor of Queenstown, senior public officials, academics and senior members of the bank, at a lively community-focussed event on Saturday at the JJ Serfontein Youth Centre where the learners will receive tuition this year. The occasion marks the expansion of Capitec Bank’s numeracy-focussed corporate social investment work to the Eastern Cape.
The programme will provide learners in the Queenstown district with tablet assisted weekly extra maths and science tuition and will cover their school fees for the year. The aim is to keep learners in the programme until they are in a position to access higher education with a matric pass, with new Grade 10 intakes every year.
Learners who complete the programme will have the opportunity to access tertiary education and study scarce skills courses such as IT and financial management.
Capitec Bank’s bursary programme was launched in the Western Cape in 2012 when 260 schools were invited to participate. 180 bursaries were awarded to Grade 10 learners from 48 schools and in 2013 bursaries were awarded to 257 Grade 10 and 86 Grade 11 learners.
The bank also sponsors IkamvaYouth, a township-based volunteer-driven programme, equipping learners from disadvantaged communities with skills and resources to access tertiary education and employment opportunities once they matriculate. The 2013 IkamvaYouth matric class had an 89% matric pass rate, with 64% achieving a bachelor pass and a further 30% qualifying for diploma study. There were also 70 distinctions amongst its 154 matriculants.
