South Africa: SA to Open First Police University

It is expected that the first 120 police students will start their studies at the university next year.
The South African police held the view that a dedicated police university is necessary for the occupational development of the police officials.
“We will be combining academic studies with a culture of discipline, honesty and professionalism,” said the commissioner. “We will be able to build future leaders for the police.”
The difference between the existing police college and the proposed university is that the university will provide academic qualification under the direct control with full autonomy of a partnership university.
As the partner of cooperation, the university will ensure the quality of learning as well as the certification of learners in a credible manner.

Progress made in national basic education in S. Africa: minister
JOHANNESBURG, (Xinhua) -- The national basic education is improving following results of last year’s exams in South Africa, a minister said in Pretoria on Wednesday.
“Many schools are fairly functional and those that were struggling are receiving more support from the national scope,” said Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.
The signs of progress were clear as the pass rate of the national exam of last year stood over 73 percent.
The study also indicated that the math and science exam results had been improved and the access to the adult education had been increased.
Since April 2008 the South African education department has invited those adults who could not read or write due to missing out on their schooling to join one of about 20,000 literacy classes across the country.
“More adult South Africans have become educated over time,” said Motshekga.
The education in South Africa is governed by two departments, namely the Department of Basic Education which is responsible for primary and secondary schools and Department of Higher Education and Training that is responsible for college or university education.
“We will continue to improve the educational quality of the early childhood. Training and providing sufficient teachers to all schools is also a priority,” said the minister.
In 2010, the basic education system consisted of more than 1.2 million pupils and 439,000 teachers in 30,000 schools in South Africa.
