“As a city we have probably the highest number of unemployed young people in the province according to Stats SA, and therefore we felt that the best way to commemorate June Month would be to try and resolve this challenge which could cripple our future if left unattended,” Ekurhuleni mayoral spokesman Zweli Dlamini explains.

“It is our hope that the young people will gain a lot from the information that will be shared with them and of course the displays that will be at the expo. This is the main reason we have brought together all the spheres of government to reveal government’s perspective on joblessness and skills development so that our people understand that this is a special key priority for government.”

The City of Ekurhuleni is targeting youth that are not unemployed and not attending any form of education or training. Ekurhuleni is home to over 3 million people and of those, over a million is unemployed. Approximately 36.9% of the unemployed is youth between the ages of 15 and 34 years. Moreover, 42% of the population of the City does not have a matric. Only 3% of the population has a qualification equivalent to a university degree.
