South Africa: FIELD Empower a Generation of Entrepreneurs One Community at a Time
Source: SA - the Good News
Source Date: Thursday, July 18, 2013
Focus: Electronic and Mobile Government, Citizen Engagement, Internet Governance
Country: South Africa
Created: Jul 18, 2013

When applicants register, they will receive more information on FIELD and be assigned a task that will be used to pre-screen them ahead of being considered for the course. Even though this first entrepreneurship course is only looking at 75 candidates, there is hope that more people will be offered this opportunity in the future.
Ivan Mzimela, Liberty Executive for GroupStrategic Services, comments on the programme: “Empowering young people with knowledge is of great importance to us here at Liberty. Knowledge and how it is used enables one to make a difference in their life and in the lives of others. It leads to innovation which is an important trait for entrepreneurs to possess. We hope that the skills and expertise that these young entrepreneurs will take from this course will allow them to go out and start successful businesses.
“Liberty was started by an entrepreneur. Sir Donald Gordon started off with an idea and the vision that no one should die poor. He built Liberty into what it is today. We would like to encourage the candidates to be selected through this process to persevere through the challenges of starting a business and to go for their dreams,” says Mzimela.
Upon application candidates will be assigned tasks to complete and present back to a selected panel for pre - screening from the 26th to the 29th of June at Makhoarane Primary School in Dobsonville, Soweto.
Based on their presentations the successful candidates will then be sent to the University of Johannesburg for psychometric testing from the 8th to the 11th of July. From there on 75 successful candidates will be selected as part of the Entrepreneur Development Program.
The course in generously subsidised by Liberty and is valued at R 18,500.00 per person. Applicants are expected to pay R 1,850.00 of which R 1,000.00 is refunded upon completion of the program.
“The fee is not to deter students from participating but is rather seen as a commitment fee. We want the candidates to understand fully that failing is acceptable, and part of being an entrepreneur, but quitting isn’t,” explained Read.
The program is open to members of the community between the ages of 18 and 35 who hold a valid matric certificate and have a passion for business. They do not need to have their own business. The course being offered is a full-time course and will begin on 15 July 2013.
