“GPT recognises the value of the environment and creating sustainable communities that are aware of the benefits of the environment,” says Lise Reed, Human Resources Manager of GPT. “This is our second year working with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) and we are committed to acknowledging this vital resource and improving life for the residents of Illovo.”
The Illovo settlement was initiated in 1992 to provide much needed housing in the subsidized cost bracket to the South of Durban. To date approximately 5 500 houses have been constructed.
GPT recognises that their tree contribution will bring improved nutrition, shade and a green legacy for future generations. The fruit and indigenous trees are also an important intervention against human caused climate change as they will offset, or sink, 409 tons of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas. In addition they will green up this settlement, settle dust and create healthier people in a healthier environment.
Councillor Thami Ngubane commented, ”This project will initiate a shift in what my community current passive lifestyle tends to be. For the first time it will create opportunities for them to start appreciating their surroundings more, being informed about our coexistence with nature, provide green possibilities for future generations to come.”
The first 555 trees will be planted in Illovo on Saturday 16 March 23013, the remaining 556 trees on Sunday 17 March 2013. Raj Jayaram, Regional Manager, GPT KZN and his team will assist with the planting of the trees with Food & Trees.
