The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is computerising all its operations under a new ICT programme to be commissioned in three weeks.
The hospital has also cleared most of its debts amounting to more than Sh400 million although CEO Dr John Kibosia says some of the pending bills are being audited before all the payments are made by the end of July.
"We want to extensively reduce the use of paper work in our system for greater efficiency and quick delivery of services," said Dr Kibosia. He said Medical Services minister Prof Anyang Nyong'o will launch the new system next month.
The new Information Communication Technology system will also help in improving financial and administrative management at the hospital.
The hospital has recorded improved collections in cost-sharing funds by Sh10 million per month. The figure is expected to rise when the ICT programme takes effect.
The monthly collections now total to more than Ksh 60 million which is marked improvement since Dr Kibosia took over. Suppliers of food stuffs, medical kitts and other requirements are comfortably working with Kibosia's team.
Dr Kibosia just returned from a two weeks official trip to the United States where he said they made used agreements on improvement of health services at the hospital and other medical facilities within Eldoret. "It was a very useful trip to the City Minnesota where we discused how to improve health care in this region.
We will have exchange programmes on training of staff from both sides and this will enhance our capacity to deliver services in a better way", said Kibosia.
Kibosia says the government has continued to support the hospital since Dr Kibosia took over and began implementing reforms.
The government provided the initial Ksh 300 million to start the restructuring after the hospital almost collapsed due to mismanagement under a former administration. A new state-of-the-art Mortuary Unit has also been completed at the hospital.
The new Unit has a hydraulic elevation unit, histo-cutting station, embalming set, stainless-steel transport unit and a stainless-steel cover tray and it will accommodate a further 48 bodies thus increasing the mortuary capacity to 136.
The mortuary becomes the first facility in the country to have installed a stainless steel mortuary refrigeration unit, which among other advantages can use a single phase (voltage) and is easy to maintain.
The project, which took close to a year, was undertaken at a cost of Kshs. 23 million.
