A new College of Information Technology has been established in Liberia to offer an Associate Degree in Information Technology.
The College, formerly known as Starz Institute of Technology, was granted license by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Education and National Commission on Higher Education to operate as a degree-granting institution in Information Technology.
The College, now referred to as the Starz College of Technology, is Liberia's first degree-granting IT institution to offer degree in the discipline and other professional studies at the institute.
The license was granted after a thorough vetting process conducted by the Liberian government headed by the Director of the National Commission on Higher Education, Michael Sleweon and Education Minister Etmonia Tarpeh, as well as other international experts.
The President of the Starz College of Technology, Latin Da Thong said the issuance of the license came at the time when Liberian youths were desperately in need of IT training to compete with students in the sub region and the world at large.
Mr. Da Thong described the process by the government as successful. Starz Institute, prior to its current status, was in partnership with the United Methodist University or UMU, but such relations collapsed as a result of some misunderstandings between the two institutions.
Thong dispelled rumors that UMU broke away from his institution because Starz was not recognized by the National Commission on Higher Education, attributing the disintegration of the partnership to insincerity allegedly on the part of the UMU, relative to funds generated from the program.
He noted that training IT personnel was necessary, especially with the presence of the fiber optic cable and discovery of oil in Liberia, adding that the country needed trained IT professionals to work in those sectors
