Postal company Zimpost will this year earn an additional US$1 million per month as it moves with the automation of its counter network.
The computerisation project started last year with the postal company setting aside US$3 million as it moved to catch up with international standards.
Zimpost was lagging behind in computerisation due to liquidity constraints that hit the parastatal during the past decade when the country experienced an economic down- turn.
Managing director Mr Douglas Zimbango said successful completion of the project would increase the company's revenue base.
"Counter automation of 26 outlets represents 20 percent growth and earns us an additional US$400 000 per month.
"As we roll out the project further to 50 percent additional revenue will rise to US$1 million on a monthly basis," he said.
Mr Zimbango said software development for the pilot project had since been completed. He said the pilot project would be at three post offices in Harare for easy monitoring and would run for three months after which it would be rolled out to 26 other Zimpost outlets countrywide.
"Targeted outlets will be regional, boarder towns and high volume," he said.
Irish-American software developer Escher has been contracted to do the work with Zimbabwe becoming the fourth African country to choose the company after Botswana, South Africa and Mauritius.
Mr Zimbango said the automation drive would improve efficiency in the postal agency's operations.
"Speed at our counters will be increased and movement of information from one outlet to another will be increased making our service more reliable," he said.
"We want to regain all the lost customers. New product line and services will also be introduced. Certainly this will bring more customers in the system."
Since Zimpost is situated close to the people, it wants to transform post offices into modern centres where a number of transactions could be made under one roof.
