Surveyors in Nigeria have been urged to use technology to address national challenges, just as their counterparts all over the world are known to focus on science, technology and knowledge for societal growth.
President, International Federation of Surveyors, Mr. Chee Hai Teo stated this when he visited the Surveyor General of the Federation, Professor Peter Nwilo ahead of the international conference of surveyors coming up next year in Nigeria.
He noted that people learnt and grew from experience and called on surveyors to do all they could to improve the profession in Nigeria and to share experiences as their contribution make the world a better place.
Hai Teo said the surveying profession faced challenges at the regional, national and international levels, adding that with the best professional practice in place, the challenges are surmountable.
He also urged Nigerian surveyors to partner with neighbouring countries to reach agreeable solutions in the issue of boundary demarcations, insisting that "whether defining of a boundary, putting a peg on the ground or doing a Global Position Observation (GPO), all are contributions to nation building."
"I thank the surveyor-general's office for the support given to the world conference of surveyors coming up soon in Nigeria. Nigeria should do the possible best to improve the surveying profession in the country," he said.
Earlier, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Professor Peter Nwilo disclosed that his office was collaborating with Space Agency that just launched two observation satellites to map the country, adding that with collaboration, mapping the country would be very easy.
He noted that the surveyor's office was the oldest government office in Nigeria, explaining that before the amalgamation of the country, the office was already in Lagos, adding that so far, the office has made tremendous progress as eight departments have been created to address issues on both national and international boundaries.
Also speaking, President of Nigeria Institute of Surveyors, Yakubu Maikano called on all those who have not come on board to do so, now that preparation for the world conference of surveyors is coming up
