Nigeria: Rep. Says Country Not Yet Prepared for Electronic Voting
Source: Leadership (Abuja)
Source Date: Sunday, March 11, 2012
Focus: ICT for MDGs
Country: Nigeria
Created: Mar 12, 2012

A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Odeneye Olusegun (ACN-Ogun), says Nigeria is not yet prepared for electronic voting.

Olusegun said this in Abuja on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He was reacting to comments made by the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega that "electronic voting was likely in 2015 general elections."

According to him, the electoral commission should concentrate on perfecting the manual system of voting instead of the electronic system.

"I think INEC should concern itself with the manual system we are operating currently," he said.

He said that the country currently lacked the infrastructure that would effectively facilitate the electronic voting process.

Olusegun added that it also lacked the manpower to operate the system which had to do with Information technology.

The legislator said that the current manual system had been marred by late arrival of voting materials experienced in past elections due to a lack of manpower.

Commenting on the clamour for a sovereign national conference by some Nigerians, Olusegun said that members of the National Assembly were legitimately elected to represent the people.

"There cannot be a parallel body to amend the constitution when the National Assembly is legally-constituted," he said.

He admitted that there were some fundamental problems in the polity that could be addressed through constitutional amendments
