Namibia: Benefits of Computers to Children

If technology is well managed, it can change the way children learn, how they think, and even how they interact with friends and adults. The computer software children use can provide valuable experiences that can give a child an edge over peers.

As technology advances, children have become more comfortable and confident in using computers. They can turn them on, follow directions whether pictorial or written and use situational and visual cues to understand their activities. Even children with emotional and physical disabilities can use computers with ease. Computers enhance mobility for disabled children and also give them a sense of control, thereby helping them to improve self-esteem.

Computers have become great tools to present concrete ideas in a symbolic medium. As the children manipulate the various ideas, they extend their knowledge, and the concepts get imprinted in their minds to be applied in similar situations. The more children use educational software the better they become as critical thinkers and better students. Take an example of geometry. A child is given a triangle to play around with. She takes the triangle and tilts it, places it on another, flips it upside down. Meanwhile the computer is calculating the angles. The child gets a good understanding of how triangles change or stay the same with movement and these concepts get imprinted in the child's mind most probably forever.

Parents

The role of parents and to some extent teachers in promoting computer usage among children is choosing the right software for the children. Appropriate software is one that enhances well rounded learning. For instance, get a drill and practice software for mathematics, discovery based software for science. Software should also be challenging to the children as well as solve problems that children can relate to. Parents should be able to use the software so that they can guide the children in operating the software. As tempting as it is for parents to work together with their children on programs, please allow the children to figure out how to get solutions for themselves. Only help when it is absolutely necessary. Solving problems by themselves, children learn more, gain confidence and attain a sense of accomplishment.
