“Madiba is fine and fully conscious and the doctors are satisfied with his condition, which they say is consistent with his age. He was in good health before admission in hospital but doctors felt the complaint needed a thorough investigation.

“He underwent a diagnostic procedure as part of his ongoing medical management. We are happy that he is not in any danger and thank the doctors for their hard work and professionalism. He is receiving good medical care," Zuma said.

He added that Madiba was expected to be discharged from hospital either tomorrow or Monday.

Zuma had earlier wished Madiba a speedy recovery and assured him of the love and good wishes of all South Africans and people throughout the world.

The Presidency has requested the public to respect the privacy of Mandela and his family.

Members of the public can send messages to Madiba through President Zuma to president@po.gov.za

An update….

Former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital following his admission yesterday.

“The doctors have decided to send him home as the diagnostic procedure he underwent did not indicate anything seriously wrong with him,” said the Presidency in a statement on Sunday.

Earlier, President Jacob Zuma said Madiba was making good progress.

"He is surrounded by his family and is relaxed and comfortable. The doctors are happy with the progress he is making.

“We thank all South Africans for their love and support of Madiba. We also thank all for affording Madiba and his family privacy and dignity," said Zuma.

Mandela underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy yesterday to determine the cause of his longstanding abdominal complaint.

"The doctors have assured us that there is nothing to worry about and that Madiba is in good health", said Zuma.
