With the R100, 000 they received in 2009 and 2010; Mokoma and his team have been able to install a security fence around the no-fee paying school, which has 23 classrooms. The money also paid for the renovations to several classrooms and for improving ablution facilities.
"The parents are contributing R100 each to augment last year's R50, 000, which we want to use to buy a bakkie to help with the school nutrition programme and other crucial administrative and management chores," Mokoma said.
"We will meet teachers and parents to discuss how best to use the latest windfall," the happy principal said.
He said the secret behind their success was simple.
"We encourage all parents to collect as many soap wrappers as possible. On Tuesdays, we have "Passport Day", when no child can enter the school without a soap wrapper.
"We also encourage the children to enlist the support of their friends, relatives and any other person in the community who is able to help us do well in the competition," Mokoma said.
An added benefit is that several pupils from Masaleng Primary School have been selected for an 80-member Dettol Shona Khona soccer coaching and life skills development camp in Johannesburg tonight, tomorrow and on Sunday. They also stand a chance to be among 12 aspirant soccer superstars who will be chosen on Sunday for a life-changing visit to the famous Sao Paulo FC Academy in Brazil for a week next month.
The second-placed Collinda Primary School in North West received R25000. Collinda and Masaleng will also receive soccer kits, including coaching and practice equipment.
