NEMA is concerned over poor disposal of old mobile phones and credit cards. The environment authority said the phones have dangerous electronic materials which could affect the health of human beings and animals.
Nema director of compliance and enforcement Malwa Langwen said poor disposal of such materials will chock the environment which is already overburdened by plastic bags. Langwen said Nema is working on a policy that will deal with the problem. "We may think it is a small problem but it is something we cannot afford to ignore," he said.
At the same time, Nema has directed all hospitals to install incinerators for destroying medical waste. Langwen said some hospitals dump their waste carelessly and asked councils not to allow them to dump harmful medical waste in public areas.
Most hospitals lack incinerators which are used to destroy hospital waste like syringes. "We have laws in place and we shall take up such issues to deal with those ignoring regulations," said Langwen.
He was speaking in Eldoret town where he ordered the municipal council to speed up the relocation of the Huruma dumpsite to a new site. The dump site is adjacent to several residential areas in the town's outskirts. Civic bodies, he said, should not locate dumping sites in areas inhabited by the public.
