The government has set aside Sh980 million to equip 1,050 schools countrywide with computers. Education secretary George Godia said the government has identified five schools per constituency to start the programme.
He spoke at the Kenya Institute of Education during the opening of the 2nd annual symposium. The theme of the event is "Education, Training and Research for Kenya Vision 2030". "We will ensure that computer lessons are taught practically because we do not want a situation where by donors give equipment and they are not put into use," said Godia. He added that the short lifespan of some donated computers pose a challenge of e-waste in the country.
According to Godia, the selected schools will also be equipped with LCD printers, laptop for teachers as well as the digitised curriculum from KIE. "We want every teacher to be ICT compliant," said Godia.
Already, KIE has developed digital content for form one and two for secondary schools as well as those for class four to seven for primary schools. In her opening remarks, KIE director Lydia Nzomo said the forum will draw participants from the development partners and interested persons from other sectors such as the KACC. "This symposium could not have come at a better time since the country is focusing on Kenya Vision 2030 and hence captures our role as educationists and spurs interest among all other Kenyans who in one way or another have a place in the national vision," said Nzomo.
Among the contemporary issues that the symposium intends to illuminate are social equity and poverty reduction, global competitiveness, education for sustainable development and innovation and education. "These participants in the symposium come along with varied qualifications and experiences which will greatly enrich the process of curriculum development," said Nzomo.
