Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu may have added fuel to the fire this week when he said, at 92, "Madiba is frail".
Spokesperson for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, has confirmed that Mr Mandela is in hospital in Johannesburg, but says he is not ill.
"We can confirm that Mr. Mandela is at Milpark hospital undergoing routine tests. He is in no danger and is in good spirits."
