Dr Mohamed says there is a need for developing better vaccines. "Depending on whether the findings that we are doing now show that the vaccine works we expect a new vaccine to be available between 2016 and 2020."
Meanwhile, the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria is demanding the recovery of $34 million which remains unaccounted for in some countries that received aid.
A report by the Fund's Inspector-General recently revealed that there was grave misuse of money in four out of 145 countries that received grants from the Fund to combat the three diseases.
The head of the Global Fund, Michel Kazatchkine, says they have a zero tolerance for corruption. Kazatchkine says the Global Fund is working with the relevant authorities to ensure that those committing fraud are brought to justice. He confirmed that criminal proceedings are already underway in Mali, Mauritania and Zambia.
