HIV Tests to be Conducted at Schools

Teachers, School Governing Bodies and the community will be asked to take part in the campaign. Because the department of health will also be involved, there will not be a need to increase the number of social workers working with schools or finding additional personnel for the project, the minister said.  

It could start as soon as next month. Motshega says they hope the project will encourage South Africans young and old to know their status and as a result be able to adjust their lives accordingly.

A school-based nurse says the message has already gone out to schools. She says she has already tested a number of learners after obtaining consent from their parents.

Head of Corporate and Donor Relations at Lovelife, Caryn Kriger, says counselling and support will be pivotal if this campaign is to work. She says schools are supposed to be positive environments and whether a 14 year old can handle being told about their status at school is a thorny issue
