It is the plight of learners such as Thandiwe that prompted Deputy
President Kgalema Motlanthe to seek urgent funding in October last year for a
makeshift high school to be built in Lawley to address the needs of the
poverty-stricken community. $0

On Wednesday, Motlanthe, accompanied by Gauteng
Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and other senior education officials, handed over the
30-classroomed state-of-the art Lawley Secondary School to the community.$0

It was an emotional moment for both parents and
teachers considering that the request for the school was only made less than
three months ago. The school is among the 20 new others that are being opened
across Gauteng as the province marked the beginning of a new school year on
Wednesday.$0

Speaking at the opening earlier this morning,
Motlanthe said the cooperation between the national and provincial government
to deliver the school was testimony that "where there is a will it is
possible to cut the red tape". $0

"One thing that we have learned from hosting
the World Cup is that if all departments work together on any given project, it
is easy to cut the red tape. This school we are opening here today is testimony
to that," Motlanthe said. $0

He called on the learners and community to set a
good standard for the school and ensure that it was kept in good condition.
"This is the very first high school in this area, you are the first
learners arriving on a clean slate...there is no history of failing here so you
have a burden of ensuring that you set a good standard."$0

The Presidency, through Minister in the Presidency
Responsible for Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane, will ensure that the
school receives the necessary support, he added. $0

In a province that has a shortage of about 212
schools, Gauteng officials have acknowledged that mobile schools like the one
in Lawley will become a regular phenomenon as a quick solution to address the
education needs of the province.$0

"It's a good school, SABS approved and has a
life span of 20-years and due to challenges that we have that require quick
solutions we will be providing many schools to fulfill our obligations to the
children of our province," said Education MEC Barbara Creecy. $0

Motlanthe was expected to visit several other
schools in the East Rand area to monitor teacher readiness on the first day. $0

Creecy confirmed that more than 97 percent of the
schools were ready to begin learning and teaching as all the learner support
material had been delivered by December last year. - BuaNews $0

New Year, New Schools For Gauteng Johannesburg - For two years 15-year-old Thandiwe Khabo who lives in the Lawley township south of Johannesburg bore the brunt of having to travel 15km to access the nearest school - sometimes by foot On many occasions especially during winter Thandiwe had to skip school as she and other learners from the area simply did not have bus and taxi fares to get to the few affordable public schools in the nearby Arnadale
