Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced further support to help developing countries manage their natural resource industries responsibly and transparently while fostering prosperity, job creation, poverty reduction and good governance. The Prime Minister made the announcement in Kinshasa where he is participating in the 14th Summit of La Francophonie.

“The effective management of a country’s natural resources is key to fostering economic growth” said Prime Minister Harper. “The support being announced today will help provide developing countries with the training necessary to manage their extractive industries in a way that benefits host countries and local communities.”

Support being provided by Canada to developing countries through the World Bank for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) will contribute to the full publication and verification of company payments and government revenues from oil, gas and mining.

Support provided by Canada to developing countries through the World Bank’s Extractive Industries Technical Advisory Facility will contribute to teaching the negotiation skills and policy expertise necessary to manage the mining, oil and natural gas industries in a responsible and transparent manner.

Today’s announcement supports the theme of this years Francophonie Summit – Environmental and Economic issues in Global Governance – and builds on the 2008 Quebec City La Francophonie declaration, which called for an expanded memberships in the EITI.
