Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Mr. Justice Richard Wagner to the Supreme Court of Canada.

“Justice Wagner is highly qualified and will bring tremendous experience to the Supreme Court of Canada,” said the Prime Minister. “He was unanimously supported by the multi-party Supreme Court Selection Panel and I am confident that he will serve Canadians well.”

On October 2, 2012, the Prime Minister announced Justice Wagner as the government’s nominee to replace Madam Justice Marie Deschamps, following her retirement on August 7, 2012.

Justice Wagner was highly recommended to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada following comprehensive consultations with the Attorney General of Quebec, senior members of the Canadian Judiciary, prominent legal organizations and members of the public.

The Supreme Court Selection Panel, comprised of Members of Parliament from the government and each recognized Opposition caucus, provided a unanimously approved list of three names for consideration to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice.

Justice Wagner appeared at a public ad hoc committee meeting to answer questions from Members of Parliament this week.

Justice Wagner is a recognized expert in commercial and civil litigation. In 2004, he was appointed as puisne judge of the Superior Court of Quebec and in 2011, he was appointed as puisne judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal.
