Ministry of ICT (MICT) on Friday launched a pilot project of Dtac Free Wi-Fi at Wat Nam Daeng School in Samut Prakan province where 150 first grade students can connect their computer tablets to the network.
Wat Nam Daeng School is situated in Samut Prakan provice—an adjacent province of Bangkok, and is one of the government schools where their 150 first grade students received a free tablet pcs under One Tablet Per Child Policy launched few months ago. The free broadband network is provided by Dtac, one of Thailand’s three leading mobile phone operators.
Students in four first grade classrooms can connect to the high speed network at the same time. Dtac also provided Wi-Fi enabled LCD television to empower the learning process in the classrooms.
This initiative is a part of the government’s free Wi-Fi programme aimed to blanket 80% of the country by May next year, said Group Captain Anudith Nakornthap, ICT Minister.
Nakornthap said on Friday that the Ministry has recently been allocated a new budget of THB 830.9 million (US$ 27.15 million) to expand the free Wi-Fi network. Currently, there are 200,000 hot spots nationwide under this programme in collaboration with private mobile companies.
The MICT is now discussing with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to expand the Wi-Fi coverage to 31, 334 schools nationwide in which the nationwide coverage would need an investment of more than THB 29.98 billion (US$ 980 million).
Meanwhile, Dtac CEO Jon Eddy Abdullah said that the Dtac Free Wi-Fi project will be provided to 12 state hospitals starting next year.
