Internal affairs minister Shinji Tarutoko said Friday that the number of national civil servants is expected to decrease by about 3,000 in fiscal 2013.
The forecast excludes the number of workers employed for a limited period, such as those engaged in rebuilding areas hit by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, according to his report to an informal meeting of cabinet ministers.
The number may change following the more detailed estimation associated with budget compilations for the next fiscal year starting in April 2013.
At a press conference, Tarutoko emphasized the government's efforts to cut personnel expenses.
Even after temporary staff are included in the total workforce estimate, the reduction in fiscal 2013 will be double the net fall of 1,300 in fiscal 2012, the minister said.
