The government will nearly double rents for apartments and houses built for national public servants in three stages from April 2014, sources said Tuesday.
Previously, the government examined an idea of raising rents by an average of 50 percent. But Finance Minister Koriki Jojima indicated a larger increase was necessary at a news conference Tuesday.
The government believes it should raise enough to cover the cost of rebuilding old housing, the sources said.
