Anchor: The government aims to block the distribution channels of online pornography, which has been blamed for a recent streak of sex crimes against women and children in South Korea. Our Kim Soyon tells us more.
Report: The government held a national policy coordination meeting Friday chaired by Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik and announced comprehensive measures to eradicate obscene materials to create a sound, healthy society.
The government will continuously monitor online hard-drives and file-sharing sites and activate a filtering system on pornographic materials around the clock. It will also mandate that Web site operators implement technical protective measures against porn.
Unregistered hard-drives will be clamped down on and obscene sites with servers based overseas will be blocked at the source via countries used as international gateways for Internet traffic.
Korea will also strengthen global cooperation with Interpol and others to crack down on foreign Web sites that heavily upload child porn materials. It will also seek to become a member of organizations including the Global Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse Online.
The government will also lay out a legal foundation to enforce administrative sanctions on adult Internet cafes including shutting down businesses.
The overall prison term will be increased for people producing child pornography, while the exact sentencing terms will be decided during the legislation process.
