The FutureGov Summit 2012 began today at 8.45am with a bang, with traditional Thai war drumming and dance ceremony meant to “bless the gathering and enliven the spirits of the audience”.
The Governor of Chiang Mai, Tanin Supasaen, welcomed the 160 delegates from over 20 countries from around the world during his opening address, during which he singled out efficiency, service delivery and transparency as the three key drivers in the move to modernise the public sector.
Tomas Soderstrom, IT CTO at Jet Propulsion Laboratories in the USA, delivered the morning’s keynote presentation, giving delegates a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology that goes into space exploration and the IT infrastructure associated with it.
His presentation included a demonstration of augmented reality applications for mobile devices that are able to condense large volumes of data into practical audio-visual information. He also talked about having to deal with legacy systems and the mechanics of delivering the Curiosity Mars Rover videos online using cloud to a worldwide audience.
His vision of technology roadmaps and connectivity “anytime, anywhere, by anyone, and with any device” was echoed in the address by the chairmen of the morning session, Laurence Millar, FutureGov’s Editor-at-Large, and Andrew Stott, Member of the UK Transparency Board and Former Deputy GCIO. The two exchanged quick volleys on their vast government technology experience before the crowd, including reflections on recent developments in their respective countries.
The Summit continues through the rest of the week, with the themes of Abundance, Tranquility and Blessings marking the activities during the three days of the event. It culminates in the FutureGov Awards Ceremony on the night of the 19th of October.
