The number of visits to the English version of the Foreign Ministry's website surged 50 percent from the previous month to 4.97 million in September, a survey by the ministry has revealed.
This is apparently due to an increase in foreigners accessing the site to confirm Japan's stance on the Senkaku Islands, a senior ministry official said Friday.
On Sept. 11, Japan nationalized three of the five islands, a territorial issue that has led to a sharp deterioration in Japan-China ties.
The ministry plans to more actively send messages confirming the legitimacy of its claim that the islands are an inherent part of Japanese territory.
