Anchor: The government says it will ease and eliminate in some cases the age limit to apply for work in the public sector in order to respond to a rapidly aging South Korean society. Jang Souie has this report.
Report: The South Korean government said during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik on Friday that it will either get rid of or ease the age limit for 117-thousand jobs in the public sector.
The government said the current system limiting employment at central government agencies and in municipal governments to people between 35 and 75 years old acts as an entry barrier for senior citizens in the labor market.
Accordingly, age limits for 20 job categories, including childcare service providers and consultants at elementary, middle and high schools who are financially supported by the central government will be abolished, while the limit for six other occupations including farm managers will be eased.
Meanwhile, age restrictions for another 330 job categories, such as street cleaners and cooks, will be scrapped or eased, and the retirement age for indefinite contract workers at around 80 public organizations will be raised to 60 years.
As of July 2011, 66-thousand temporary workers and 58-thousand indefinite contract workers were employed by the central government and local governments.
Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik said that the recent decision was made to lay the groundwork for welfare through jobs in light of an aging population, stressing that the public and private sector should work to raise the level of economic participation by senior citizens.
