President Lee Myung-bak urged South Korean police Friday to come up with fundamental measures for public security, saying nobody can lead a happy life in an insecure environment.
President Lee said during the 67th Police Day ceremony that South Korean citizens were shocked by a recent series of crimes targeting women and children.
He said protecting the safety of the citizens is the reason police exist, stressing that sexual violence, violence against children, and school violence must be resolved with strong determination.
Lee also said that the current administration believes safety is the highest form of welfare and that the number of police officers has been increased by around six-thousand since the 1990s. He asked police officers to make a difference that the citizens can recognize.
Around three-thousand government officials, foreign attaches and police officers took part in the Police Day ceremony.
