KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (NNN-Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has reminded corporate bodies to also focus on the welfare of their staff and the community besides the profit aspect. He said the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme was among the important strategies in providing the catalyst and driving the country's socio-economic changes thus ensuring that the corporate bodies concerned could survive in the long-term. "Thus, it is important for the corporate sector to integrate the CSR in the implementation of their development operations." This is because society forms an important element in deciding the company's long-term profits and growth factor," he said in his speech at the Prime Minister's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award 2011 organised by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, here. Muhyiddin said corporate bodies should also work together with the relevant parties in overcoming the fragility of the family institution and the community's social values currently which contributed to various social problems.
For this purpose, the forging of a smart partnership and strategic pact between the government and other parties such as the non-governmental organisations (NGOs), charitable voluntary bodies, the corporate sector and the general public was strongly emphasised. The Deputy Prime Minister wanted more corporate bodies to work together with the government in implementing community programmes to ensure that the people enjoyed prosperity. At the event, General Electric (GE) Malaysia was announced the overall winner of the Prime Minister's CSR Award 2011. The company also won in the categories for Workplace Practices and the Empowerment of Women. Other winners were ECM Libra Financial Group which won in the Education category; Kulim (M) Berhad (Environment); and Maybank (Community and Culture). Iris Corporation Berhad (Community and Social Welfare); VISTA Eye Specialist (Best Small Company CSR); and IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Family Friendly Workplace). The Prime Minister's CSR Award was introduced in 2007 to encourage the corporate sector to work together with the government in discharging their corporate social responsibility.
