JAKARTA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the developing countries to team up to tackle the trade barriers in a bid to promote world trade development at the 2012 World Export Development Forum (WEDF) here on Monday.
The three-day forum with the theme "Linking Growth Markets: New Dynamics in Global Trade" was organized by the Indonesian Trade Ministry and International Trade Center, and attended by more than 500 delegates from 50 countries.
"Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) in developing countries often represent a major impediment to international trade and market access." Yudhoyono said in his speech at the opening ceremony.
The president explained that within the South-South trade, NTMs could be as high as conventional tariffs, adding that although the WTO has addressed this issue, there remain some aspects which are not yet fully dealt with.
He stressed that the objectives of lowering barriers in trade among countries must be achieved, "with lower barriers, we will have increase in trade. And as trade increases, the global growth will also rise." he said.
"Therefore, I invite all of you to discuss and showcase initiatives that could enhance regulatory transparency and predictability, especially of the Non-Tariff Measures." said the president.
The 2012 World Export Development Forum in Jakarta was the 13th forum since 1999 initiated by the International Trade Center. WEDF is a forum where developing markets are exposed to the knowledge and technical information necessary for them to compete on an equal footing with their developed nation counterparts.
