More promotion opportunities are in the pipeline for graduates in the civil service in Malaysia.

Chief Secretary to the government Dr Ali Hamsa said a degree holder who starts at Grade 41 should be able to retire at a grade as high as his (Dr Ali’s) position.

However, currently there are not enough opportunities for everybody to reach such levels.

“We are still discussing this with the Public Service Department. The special commission on public services will also be coming out with a report on the matter,” he said.

Dr Ali was speaking to reporters after attending the closing ceremony of the 15th Public Service Commissions conference in Ipoh yesterday.

On another note, he dismissed the allegation that the country has too many civil servants.

Opposition political alliance Pakatan Rakyat had previously called for the civil service to be reduced.

“There is no such thing as a bloated civil service.”

“We have the right size now at about 1.4 million civil servants, and we are increasing our productivity each day through creative and innovative methods,” said Dr Ali.

He also called on heads of department to go down to the field to monitor the effectiveness of services rendered to the public by their officers.
