Vietnam to Build National Database for Biodiversity |

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is working together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to build a national biodiversity database to improve the management of biodiversity and strengthen the implementation of the Biodiversity Law in Vietnam.
The project will help Vietnam deal with the lack of a consistent system for collecting, storing and sharing information related to the conservation and sustainable development of the country’s biodiversity.
Based from the project’s feasibility study, decision makers are unable to maximise the use of biodiversity related information as it is currently being shared in various government agencies in its raw and unreadable format.
Thuy Nguyen Xuan, Director of the IT Centre at the Vietnam Administration Office, told FutureGov that the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014 with the budget of USD 3 million contributed by the Government of Japan.
“The project will also look into proposing mechanisms on how relevant government agencies can cooperate on important management issues to facilitate a conducive environment for sharing data.”
Thuy added that Nam Dinh province, which has prominent high-biodiversity areas, such as Xuan Thuy National Park and the surrounding wetlands will be the “demonstration province” to test the local system of the national biodiversity database.
