Tamilnadu state government is soon expected to float tenders to invite consultant agencies specialising in e-commerce and e-governance services to put together a detailed working plan for the proposed common service centres where a range of services will be provided under one counter. At these centres, to come up in urban areas, people will be able to apply and receive birth and community certificates, pay taxes and utility bills and even book travel tickets at a single counter. The system is to be implemented by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot). The system would first be implemented in Chennai as a pilot project and later extended to other urban areas.
Kerala and Karnataka already have such a system in the form of citizen call centres and Bangalore One. A citizen call centre in Kerala allows people to call in to clear their doubts on various government schemes and documents, whether they are entitled to them, ways to access them and how they work. Bangalore One allows residents to pay mobile phone bills of state-run and private telecom operators, book tickets on KSRTC buses, pay insurance premiums and book train tickets on Southern Railways.
