The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced the top-10 news items that have triggered a paradigm shift in the mobile era.
- Surging Smartphone Users: The number of smartphone users has jumped to 6.2 million as of November 2010, up from 806,000 in December 2009. The portion of smartphone users to total mobile users reached 12%, up from 2% in the same period.
- Gaining Momentum in Open Markets and Applications: While mobile applications have increased from 230,000 in March to 440,000 in November, in major global app stores such as the App Store by Apple and the Android Market by Google, the number of applications in Korea reached 7,640 in November, up from 4,400 in March.
- Spread of Wi-Fi Zones: In terms of the number of public Wi-Fi zones, Korea ranks as number two in the world with 66,000 hotspots as of November 2010, increasing from 13,000 in January 2010.
- Launch of Unlimited Mobile Data Plans: The three major mobile carriers, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, have introduced unlimited mobile data plans using the 3G network.
- Beginning of the Tablet PC Era: After launching the Galaxy Tab, the 7-inch tablet PC by Samsung, Apple’s iPad was also introduced in the local market.
- Popularity of SNS and LBS: In conjunction with the proliferation of smartphones, various mobile services such as social networking and location-based service are booming.
- Preparing K-WAC: To compete with Apple’s App Store and the Android Market, global companies including major operators are preparing to launch the WAC (Wholesale Applications Community). In Korea, all three mobile operators are joining hands to create a Korean version of the WAC, the K-WAC.
- Cooperation for Wireless Internet: To expand the wireless Internet ecosystem, mobile companies including operators are cooperating to create developer-friendly environments such as opening a application development center and creating a related association to promote wireless Internet services.
- Convergence with Wireless and Other Industries: “Smart work,” smartphones and mobile services have been converging with other industries.
- Increasing Dissatisfactions over Smartphones: Frequent glitches and faulty smartphones are rising.
In a departure from local companies such as Samsung, overseas-made handset makers, mainly Apple, have received a lot of complaints regarding after-sales service. KCC telecom regulator finally had to set guidelines that distinguishes minimum requirements in after-sales services for smartphone providers.
