Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Tuesday he is considering increasing the governments expenditures for measures to protect the domestic agricultural sector to cushion the impact of freer trade on it down the road. I will consider necessary fiscal measures and sources of such money for the sector, Kan told a plenary session of the House of Representatives in reference to his governments recent decision to further liberalize trade with the rest of the world.
The decision was made to help ensure Japans future prosperity, but the countrys agricultural sector, with an aging labor force and many restrictions, has long been a bottleneck for Japan in aiming for ambitious free trade agreements with other countries.
