BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official Monday called on local governments to redouble their efforts to streamline government organs at township levels across the country.
State Councilor Ma Kai made the remarks at a national teleconference on the country's reform of township government organs.
Ma said the reform of township government organs is crucial to the effective implementation of government policies in rural areas.
Township governments should enhance their abilities to serve the public and manage society, Ma said, adding that township governments may only freeze or reduce their staff numbers.
All local governments should work to ensure that all reform tasks are fulfilled by 2012, Ma said.
After five years of trial reforms beginning in 2004, the Chinese central government rolled out a new round of reforms in 2009, to streamline government organs at the township level.
