Richard Marles has been named as Australia's new Parliamentary Secretary for the Pacific.
The position was vacated by the now-retired Duncan Kerr in September 2009, and has been left vacant for almost a year.
The appointment of Mr Marles to the role is an early signal from Australia's new Foreign minister Kevin Rudd that the country will continue its commitment to the Pacific.
Mr Marles says it is important to raise the profile of the Pacific within Australia, where discussion of Pacific issues in the wider public is rare.
"There are some very important countries within the Pacific we're dealing with and I think at times it doesn't get the air time in the Australian public debate that it should...I'm really keen to try and improve that."
He says he has had a lot of contact with the region through his work with the union movement and union-affiliated legal firms.
Mr Marles says he has a passion for the region and is keen to travel to the Pacific to make himself known.
