Muscat — With majority of its users mostly transit passengers, Oman Air, has urged the need for simplified visa and immigration facilities for visitors to Muscat. As part of an initiative from the national flag carrier, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) may introduce an e-Visa system in the next two months.
“With this e-Visa, a transit or stopover passenger may be able to spend up to 72 hours in Oman, provided they possess a hotel booking,” said Abdulrahman al Busaidy, Chief Operating Officer, external wing, Oman Air.
He said that the airline is planning a special stopover programme in arrangement with various hotels in Oman. “Currently, there is a tie-up with Hormuz Grand Hotel for a package under which we offer visas and free city tours. The one night package costs RO149 and the two-night package around RO199.”
Speaking at the tourism seminar organised by Meed yesterday, Al Busaidy said that more friendly measures should be initiated to tap the stopover or transit traffic and make them spend a few days in the Sultanate. “We are even ready to charge low fares to bring in more visitors to Oman, but the hotels should be ready to fix attractive room rates, especially during the off-peak summer season.”
He urged hotels in Salalah to cut room rates during summer and offer more packages for visitors from the GCC. He said that the airline is in talks with immigration and customs officials so that passengers travelling to Salalah via Muscat need to undergo routine checks only at the final destination.
Al Busaidy said that the airline will be increasing frequencies to major destinations in Europe, except Paris, from current three to four flights a week to daily services. Over a ten-year period, as the airline seeks to expands its fleet to around 70 aircraft, more destinations will be added, including that to China, European countries, Vietnam and may be even New York.
