His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said – may God protect him – has issued a Royal Grant bestowing one free laptop for each beneficiary family of the social insurance that has at least one child or more registered in the K-12 school system, as well as granting one free personal computer per student in these families who are presently enrolled in higher education studies. The grant also includes a subsidization of the cost of a personal computer for students of higher education enrolled in the first year of study in the Sultanate, in addition to teachers who are graduates of the Government IT Training & Certification (GITTC) project. With a value of more than 20 million RO and expected to benefit approximately 113, 000 Omani citizens, these grants were established in an effort to support citizens’ ability to acquire personal computers and to promote their participation in the building of Oman’s digital society.
This announcement was made by His Excellency Ahmed Abdulnabi Macki, Minister of National Economy and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, who stated: “This Royal Grant coincides with the celebrations of the Sultanate's 40th National Day and comes as reaffirmation of His Majesty’s interest in developing the digital capacities of citizens and enhancing their skills when dealing with information technology. To be able to readily access government eServices and take advantage of information and communication technology has become the key to transforming Oman into sustainable knowledge-based society.”
HE Macki also added: "This grant from His Majesty offers tremendous motivation to move forward towards progressing and improving the Sultanate in accordance with the plan to transform Oman into a sustainable knowledge-based society through empowering its people. This grant will now allow different groups and segments of society to acquire a personal computer and communicate with the digital world, access eGovernment services and thereby strengthen the efforts to build a robust digital society in Oman.”
HE Mohammed Nasser Al Khasibi, Secretary General of the Ministry of National Economy and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Information Technology Authority (ITA), expressed his delight with the Royal Grant saying: “We express our deepest recognition and gratitude to His Majesty for announcing this grant, which comes as continuing assurance to continue to advance and improve the citizens of Oman and provide them with the tools of science and modern knowledge, as this is the basis for development of a country. This grant is no doubt a continuation of what was confirmed by His Majesty in his speech to the Council of Oman in 2008 regarding his keen interest to create a national strategy for building the digital capacity of citizens and their skills when dealing with information technology and communications, both being, as His Majesty pointed out in his speech, “…the main engine of the development in the Third Millennium.”.
