Holly Mahlalela, 35, said he was deeply affected by HIV as his brother had died from the virus in 2007.
“My brother’s passing brought me a lot of pain and affected our family because he was helping us financially,” Mahlalela said.
Mahlalela himself tested HIV positive in 2001 and is currently on antiretroviral treatment (ART).
“When I think about my status, I get depressed sometimes but I have accepted that it is part of my life,” Mahlalela said.
Twenty-five year old Nancy Hadebe found out she was HIV positive last year.
“I was hurt when I found out that I was HIV positive but I have accepted my status. I am currently on treatment and have had no side effects. My family knows my status and have been very supportive,” Hadebe said.
According to the Progress Report on the National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB, and STIs, by the end of the 2013, about 2.3 million patients were on ART in the public sector and 148 331 were children.
It is estimated that 250 000 patients were on ART in the private sector at this time.
Teenager Phumlani Rikhotso said he was sexually active and had been tested two weeks ago. He had tested negative.
The 17-year-old said he knew how to put on a condom correctly as he had learned about HIV at school.
The outreach programme of the HCT Campaign forms part of a partnership between government, Sasol and other businesses. It seeks to provide Sasol employees, contractors and the surrounding communities with much-needed comprehensive health services.
The national HTC Campaign was launched by President Jacob Zuma in April 2010 to encourage people to know their HIV status and access counselling and treatment.
During their visit to Mpumalanga, Deputy President Ramaphosa, the Ministers and Premier handed out condoms and engaged with residents at a taxi rank in Embalenhle.
They also signed a pledge, along with business and the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), to fight HIV.
