The Department of Public Works, which is spearheading the programme, says the third phase is expected to create job opportunities in four different sectors namely, infrastructure, environment and culture, social, and non-state sector.

Noloyiso Ndazana, a young mother of two, told SAnews that since she matriculated, it has been difficult for her to secure a job.

“I am confident that I am going to secure a job in the programme. Although it is not something permanent, I’ll be able to put food on the table for my kids,” she said.

The EPWP Projects employ workers on a temporary or on-going basis either by government, contractors or other non-governmental organisations under the Ministerial Conditions of Employment for the EPWP or learnership employment conditions.

Through the programme, all those that are employed are taught various skills that will enable them to secure employment after the term of the programme.

Ndazana hopes that the skills that she will learn through the programme will enable her to find a job.

For Vuyisile Manzini, a local resident, the launch of the EPWP has raised his hopes, as he has already given the officials his name and other details. He is waiting for that call to tell him to come and start work.

“It’s been many years that I have been looking for work with no luck. I hope this time things will change for the better,” he said.

Although he does not have formal training for any job, Manzini said he is prepared to do anything and learn anything that will leave him with a skill.
