The photo competition is in line with the celebration of International Year of Forests 2011 and the Biodiversity Decade. SADC joins the international community in commemorating these two events. The competition is open to all SADC nationals and residents and will run until 15 October 2011. The top three winning photos will be presented at SADC exhibition booth during the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban, South Africa at the end of this year. Winners will each receive a digital camera.
Forests are home to 80% of our land animals and plants and are essential to people, providing resources, homes and clean air and water. They also act as sinks for carbon dioxide and green house gases, which are responsible for climate change and global warming.
Over the next ten years, from 2011 - 2020, countries all over the world are called upon to take action to help save the variety of life on Earth so that Man can live more in harmony with nature. Our wellbeing is dependent on the health of our ecosystems. This decade is critical as it is the timeframe for implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity which was agreed in Nagoya Japan in October 2010.
