The future is broadband and Africans must begin to invest in broadband development and penetration in order to meet the millennium development goals.
These were the views of information and communications technology (ICT) experts who gathered at the ongoing International Telecommunications Union (ITU) conference holding in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Addressing participants yesterday at one of the sessions, ITU Secretary General, Dr. Hamadoun Toure, highlighted the present and future benefits of broadband deployment, and encouraged African leaders to invest in broadband development and penetration, insisting that the future of every nation is broadband.
Vice-President Namadi Sambo who represented President Goodluck Jonathan at the conference, in company of other Nigerian delegates, said each year, countries gather to debate and explore on new technologies that will drive development across globe, adding that Nigeria is interested in using technology to better the lots of its citizenry, hence its heavy representation at the conference. He said the telecoms sector in Nigeria had made appreciable progress since the inception of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), coupled with the launch of NigComSat 1R, which is a replacement satellite that is further creating access to bandwidth.
"Nigeria is committed to broadband development and government has taken it upon itself as a priority that must be addressed," Sambo said.
Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Eugene Juwah, while addressing a large audience at the conference, said, there was need for countries to begin to consider convergence of technologies and to develop business models that would further drive the spread of broadband penetration in their countries.
At the Nigeria pavilion, Namadi Sambo played host to foreign diplomats and Head of States from other countries, where he showcased the Nigerian vision for ICT development, as well as the opportunities for investment in the Nigerian telecoms sector.
