An NGO has rolled out an ICT programme to equip Makueni residents with basic computer skills. The NGO, ICT for Development, was started last year and has trained 2,712 people in nine locations of Kilome Constituency.
The NGO is currently training more than 180 students at Kasikeu . Speaking yesterday, the ICT for Development director Jonathan Mativo said his desire to equip the locals with basic computer skills started when he was working with Plan International as an ICT officer.
He said the aim of the initiative is to enable people to venture into ICT businesses and raise their living standards. "Through the ICT training, many people have started ICT income generating activities and I am sure soon they will be economically stable," he said.
He said with the emergence of the Konza ICT Centre in Malili, the local people should have basic computer skills to enable them use the facility for their own benefit.
"With the introduction of devolved government people at the villages need to endear themselves with information technology for development and I'm sure the initiative will offer a boost,"' he said.
He further said the project has so far attracted Donors who have interest in changing the lives of the locals through sustainable development projects and is hoping that it will transform many lives before the end of next year.
"I am targeting to train people through out Makueni County and before the two- year project ends I will have equipped over 3,000 locals with the basic skill," Mr. Mativo quipped.
Mativo uses a simple technology to train the students. He has connected over 15 monitors to one CPU through networking in every class. Each lesson takes two hours.
Amazingly the ICT project has attracted even the old in the society and Reverend David Mulandi aged 83 from Mukaa village is among the beneficiaries.
According to Mr. Mativo, Reverend Mulandi was trained for two months, July and august last year when the project kicked off and the training has benefited him a lot.
"We awarded reverend Mulandi with a certificate and a lap top to help him practice while at home. He is currently on face book besides being a blogger," he said.
The project has also helped Mrs. Agnes Kamuya, 58 year-old retired who said she uses the skill to run her children's orphanage through direct communication with her sponsor in U.SA.
Mr. Mativo also said the ICT for Development NGO has been active in providing school going girls in the area with sanitary pads.
