The Uganda Communications Commission has been elected to sit on the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) for the next four years, the commission said in a statement released on Oct. 10.
UPU is the United Nations agency that coordinates postal services worldwide. It is headquartered in Berne, Switzerland. The elections took place during the 25th UPU Congress that took place in Qatar recently.
"Uganda accepts with humility the honor and privilege given to us to serve on this august body of UPU," Uganda's ICT minister, Ruhakana Rugunda who led the delegation from Uganda to Qatar said.
He added Uganda was proud of her modest achievements of having built a sound regulatory and policy framework that has contributed to a vibrant and dynamic postal industry in the region and beyond.
"We cherish UPU as a global forum that must remain a vital force in the continued development of the services offered to the global customer," the minister said.
The UPU Council of Administration consists of 41 countries from around the world. Aside from ensuring continuity of UPU, the body is also responsible for promoting and coordinating all aspects of technical assistance among member countries.
